Sometimes we love to grandstand to an audience of strangers at a party, but we might share more personal opinions over dinner with five or six friends. Those two ways of communicating aren’t mutually exclusive; in fact, having both makes us whole. In the landscape of present-day social media, there’s just as much action in private Facebook groups, Slack channels, group text threads, and direct messages as there is on our public feeds.
